Graduate Medical Education (GME) program for primary care and high need specialties targets underserved areas


The 2017 Acts of Assembly, Chapter 780, Item 306 authorizes the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) to make supplemental payments for new Graduate Medical Education (GME) residency slots effective July 1, 2018. Supplemental payments shall be made for up to 10 new medical residencies beginning in state fiscal year (SFY) 2019. The supplemental payment for each new qualifying residency slot will be $100,000 annually for three (3) years. Payments will be made quarterly.All ten slots may be filled by high need specialties if the applications meet the criteria.Any remaining slots may be awarded for primary care. Preference will be given for residencies located in underserved areas of the Commonwealth that serve Medicaid beneficiaries.

How To Apply

Institutions should complete and submit an application for each desired residency slot. This requirement stands regardless of the specialty mix of requested slots. For example, if an institution requests one general pediatrician slot, one family practice slot, and a general surgery slot, it should complete 3 separate applications. Additional instructions and information are provided in the application.

September 15, 2017Applications are due to DMAS
October 1, 2017DMAS notifies Programs and Sponsoring Institutions about approval or disapproval of their application(s)
June 1, 2018Approved institutions certify to DMAS that they meet criteria for supplemental payment and have filled all awarded residency slots
July 1, 2018DMAS awards new GME supplemental payments and residents begin
