The Department of Medical Assistance Services administers the processing of the Temporary Detention Orders (TDO) for authorization of payments for services provided to residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia since July 1, 1995. A TDO is obtained and issued for a person who is in imminent danger to themselves or others as a result of mental illness or is so seriously mentally ill to care for self and is incapable or unwilling to volunteer for treatment. TDO's time duration shall not exceed 48 hours prior to a commitment hearing unless the 48 hours terminates on a Saturday, Sunday, legal holiday or there is unusual circumstances (inclement weather, custody issues). The hearing must be held on the next workday. Coverage and reimbursement is provided to the facility and for physician services provided that relates to emergency medical or psychiatric care. Medical screenings or services provided that do not relate to the mental illness are excluded from coverage. |
