Apply for Income Assistance

It is important that every family in Virginia has enough money to meet their basic needs. The Department of Social Services can help struggling families through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

The TANF program provides eligible families with a monthly cash payment to meet their basic needs. Virginians can easily check their eligibility for TANF and apply online using the CommonHelp application. You can also apply in-person at a local DSS office.

Children can also be eligible for the program if they are:

  • Under age of 18, OR 18 years old and planning to graduate from high school before age 19
  • Going to school regularly if they are between the ages of 5 and 18
  • Living with a parent or other relative
  • A US citizen or eligible immigrant

For more information about the TANF program, visit the Department of Social Services website. Apply today.

Virginia Medicaid is always accepting applications. Click here to learn if you are eligible for Medicaid/FAMIS health insurance.
