Get Help with Buying Food

1 in 10 Virginians struggle with hungerIf you are struggling to feed yourself or your family, the Department of Social Services offers several food assistance programs that can help.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) gives eligible households a debit card that can be used like cash to buy food items from authorized stores. Eligibility is determined by family size and household income. Click here to learn more about SNAP benefits, or use the Virginia CommonHelp application to apply online

The Department of Social Services also partners with the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, an organization that distributes 120 million pounds of food each year to agencies that serve hungry Virginians. The organization offers children safe places to have a meal and provides emergency assistance to disaster victims.
