Resources to Help Virginians Understand the New Federal Work Requirements

As a result of a new federal law, changes are coming to Virginia Medicaid. Virginia is committed to helping eligible Virginians stay covered so they can get the health care they need.  

Virginia Medicaid is preparing to implement new Federal Work Requirements for certain adults enrolled in Medicaid Expansion. The requirements are scheduled to begin January 1, 2027.

This page will be updated regularly as additional information becomes available.


Work Requirement Communication Toolkit

The communication Toolkit provides materials that community partners and stakeholders can use to educate and assist Medicaid members.

The toolkit is designed for:

  • Medicaid members and families;
  • Health care providers;
  • Managed care organizations;
  • Community-based organizations;
  • Advocacy organizations;
  • Workforce development organizations;
  • Educational institutions;
  • Faith-based organizations;
  • Health navigators; and
  • Other organizations that serve Virginians.

Help Spread the Word

Community partners play an important role in helping Medicaid members understand changes to their coverage.

We encourage organizations to:

  • Share Virginia Medicaid educational materials;
  • Display flyers and posters in locations where members receive services;
  • Include information in newsletters, emails and websites;
  • Share approved social media messages;
  • Help members understand notices they receive from Virginia Medicaid;
  • Connect members with employment, education, training and community resources when appropriate; and
  • Encourage members to keep their contact information current.
